Taking Care of your Canvas this Summer

Marine Canvas Care: How to Extend the Life of Your Canvas and Clear PVC

Marine canvas and clear PVC play a vital role in protecting your vessel from the elements, but exposure to sun, salt, dirt and pollutants means regular care is essential. With the right cleaning and maintenance routine, you can significantly extend the life, appearance and performance of your marine covers and enclosures.

Caring for Acrylic Marine Canvas

Routine maintenance is the key to keeping acrylic canvas looking its best. Regularly sponge or hose the fabric to remove surface dirt and salt. For general soiling, dry brush with a soft brush, then sponge with warm water. Stubborn stains can be spot cleaned using a gentle, approved cleaner such as 303 Multi-Surface Cleaner.

After thorough cleaning, acrylic canvas may lose some of its water repellency. Reapplying a fabric protector like 303 Fabric Guard restores water resistance and helps protect against future staining. Always apply in thin, even coats to clean, completely dry fabric. Avoid harsh detergents, bleach-based products and dry cleaning, as these can damage the fabric and protective coatings.

Maintaining Clear PVC Curtains

Clear PVC requires special attention to maintain clarity and flexibility. After every boat outing, rinse curtains with fresh water to remove salt and environmental abrasives, then air dry or gently dry with a microfiber cloth.

Every one to two months, clean using an approved product such as IMAR Protective Cleaner, wiping gently with a soft cloth. Polishing every three to four months with IMAR Protective Polish is the most important step, as it builds a protective barrier that enhances clarity and slows UV degradation.

Avoid solvents, harsh chemicals, abrasive cloths and sunscreen contact, as these can permanently damage clear PVC. When not in use, keep panels fastened in place to maintain shape and longevity.

With consistent care, your marine canvas and clear PVC will stay functional, clear and looking great for years to come!
